Dr. Xiong currently is head of Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, as well as one of vice directors of State Key Laboratory of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Science, Wuhan University. He was an undergraduate student in Department of River Engineering, Wuhan University of Hydraulic & Electrical Engineering (WUHEE), China, for the period of1990/09 to 1994/06 and obtained the B.E. degree with the first-class honors. During the period of 1995/10 to 1996/12, he was a M.Sc. student in Department of Engineering Hydrology, National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway and conferred on with the M.Sc. degree in Hydrology with the first-class honors. Later, from 1997/10 to 2000/08, he continued his PhD study still in Department of Engineering Hydrology, NUI Galway, with the researches focused on the DEM-based distributed rainfall-runoff watershed modeling.
In 2001, he returned to China as a faculty member with Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, as well as a research staff with State Key Laboratory of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Science, Wuhan University. He has held the professorship in hydrology since 2006. In January 2015, he is appointed as “Chang Jiang Scholar” by Ministry of Education, P.R. China. The three major research fields for Dr. Xiong include: watershed rainfall-runoff modelling, flood forecasting, and hydrological frequency analysis.
