He joined the faculty of Stake Key Laboratory of Water Resources & Hydropower Engineering Science in 2003,is currently a professor of hydrology and water resources at the Wuhan University.

Prof.Hu did his undergraduate work at the Wuhan University and received his B.S. in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering with an emphasis in water resources planning and management in 1986. From then on, he pursued graduate studies at the Hydropower Department of the Wuhan University. Following extensive coursework in reservoir operation, his PhD thesis concentrated on decision support system of reservoir operation. Upon receiving his PhD in 1993, he became a postdoctoral researcher in the stochastic hydrology group at the College of Water Resources and Hydropower at the University of Sichuan. His postdoc work focused on the development and implementation of neural network model for river flow prediction. He continued on at the Wuhan University as a Postdoctoral Scholar where he turned his attention to optimal drainage and irrigation before joining the faculty at the Wuhan University in July of 1995.

For most of his career to date, he has lectured in Water Resources Planning and Management, System Operation and its Application to drainage and Irrigation, Artificial Neural Network, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised over twenty PhD students.

He is the author of over 150 papers in referred journals, a co-author of two books on optimal drainage system operation, and the author of book on neural network optimization and prediction. Prof. Hu has led more than ten national research projects fund by the Natural Science Foundation of China, Fok Ying-Tong Education Foundation for Young Teacher, Scientific Research Foundation for the Returned Overseas Chinese Scholars, China Postdoctoral Science Foundation and Ph.D. Programs Foundation of Ministry of Education of China.

His principal research interests are in  1) water resources deployment, water resources allocation as well as reservoir operation and hydrological forecasting; 2) simulation of farmland drainage, and response mechanism of crops to drought stress and waterlogging stress; 3) intelligence evolutionary algorithm for multi-objective decision of large scale system; and 4) water recourses management in nuclear accident.
